Why is the Test Done?

This test is used to assess the risk of prostate cancer in patients with raised PSA levels. The PSA concentration in the serum of healthy men is lower than that in seminal fluid. PSA in seminal fluid is predominantly free or uncomplexed. In serum, the majority of PSA is bound to inhibitors, including α1-antichymotrypsin (ACT) and α2-macroglobulin (A2M). Higher total PSA levels and lower percentages of free PSA are associated with higher risks of prostate cancer.
