Why is the Test Done?
Prolactin is a hormone which is responsible forpromoting breast milk production (lactation). It is normally elevated in women during pregnancy and just after childbirth. It is normally low in men and non-pregnant women. This test is done to evaluate female infertility, amenorrhea, galactorrhea, abnormal nipple discharge, erectile dysfunction and monitoring pituitary tumors that produce prolactin.
