Why is the Test Done?
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin, produced by
the parafollicular cells of thyroid and neuroendocrine cells of lung and intestine.
Being an acute phase reactant, the serum levels of this protein rise in response to
inflammation, especially bacterial etiology and tissue injury. Procalcitonin is a protein produced in the body as a response to bacterial infection and tissues injury in the body . It is also used to Distinguish between bacterial and non-bacterial causes of infections, To Diagnose bacterial meningitis versus viral meningitis and as a Prognostic marker is atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
